LEUKEMIA AND LYMPHOMA SOCIETY CLUB

Advisor: Ms Leger

Founded: 2023

Description:

Overall, we plan to use fundraisers to fund cutting-edge research that will lead to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics, and personalized medicine that will improve and save patients' lives. These funds will also be used to provide free education and support to blood cancer patients and families, such as personalized, one-on-one support, assistance with locating and enrolling in clinical trials, and other services. Organizing events will mobilize countless advocates to push for policy changes that will speed up the development of new cancer treatments and reduce barriers to care.

MEETINGS (DAY AND TIMES):

First meeting is on October 19 at 2:25

Biweekly, Thursday at 2:25pm - 3:15pm

Officers: Syeda Bukhari, Viviane Almeida, Yesha Patel

Activities:

We will be developing workshops for the members to learn more about blood diseases. These workshops will eventually lead to a bigger project where individual members will choose an advocacy project to increase awareness on Leukemia, Lymphoma, Hodgkin’s Disease and Myeloma, and other blood cancers.

We are also planning to create care packages for cancer patients at Boston Children’s Hospital around the holidays, for example, for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We would have a fundraiser to either collect money or items for the care packages. Students could volunteer to put the packages together, and some would be able to go to the hospital and deliver it to the children. Working together with patients is an important aspect of our mission. This creates a sense of community and gives members first hand experiences into how blood cancers can affect the lives of people, urging us to do the most we can to raise awareness and help fund research.

To complete the care packages, we hope to work alongside other clubs, in hopes to not only create a greater sense of community within SHS but also to provide other club members with the opportunity to educate themselves. These care packages would be accompanied by cards personalized by each student choosing to participate.

Other activities would include student-led presentations, discussions with health care professionals, guest speakers (Amanda Visco, an employee of the LLS non-profit), and collaboration/participation in year round events led by LLS.
