Shrewsbury Public Library

Decription: The Shrewsbury Public Library is seeking to fill a Teen Room Aide/Library Page position. This seasonal position runs from September through June each year, with a typical schedule of Fridays 3:30-5:00 p.m. and from noon to 4:00 p.m. on school early release days.

The essential functions of this job are:

• Assisting the Teen Librarian in supervising the Teen Room and adjacent areas
• Communicating policies and usage guidelines to teen visitors
• Assisting at teen events and programs
• Other duties as assigned by the Teen Librarian

Necessary qualifications are:

• Excellent interpersonal skills, especially in relating to teenagers
• Ability to work effectively in a noisy, fast-paced environment
• Ability to provide at least a two-year commitment to the position
• Ability to communicate tactfully and respectfully with library visitors

Description: Summer Program Staff Members and Leaders (20-40 hours):

The Town of Shrewsbury is seeking multiple dedicated, enthusiastic, positive role models to join the Recreation Department this Summer as Part-time Summer Program Staff Members, mid June through late August.

The successful candidates for Summer Program Staff will be responsible for supervision, safety, and overall experience of youth participants involved in the  Shrewsbury Recreation summer programs. Summer staff will be tasked with implementing programming, upholding departmental policies and procedures as directed by the program director or his/her designee.  Interaction with parents, guardians, and caregivers will be mandatory. This is a seasonal position with an expectation of working 6-9 weeks during the summer. 

Summer Boat Ramp Attendant (8-20 hours):

The Town of Shrewsbury is seeking multiple enthusiastic self-starters to join the Recreation Department this Summer as Part-time Boat Ramp Attendants, late May through mid September. The Shrewsbury Recreation Department manages the two state-owned boat ramps located in Shrewsbury on Lake Quinsigamond. In agreement with the State, we collect fees per watercraft for use of the boat ramp facilities which in turn support the maintenance and upkeep of the ramps. 

The successful candidates for Boat Ramp Attendant will support overall ramp operation by greeting the public, providing information, collecting fees, monitoring car and trailer parking, and maintaining security; all other related work as required.

• Supervises swimming activities at the aquatics facility and ensures that policies, guidelines, and safety procedures are followed.
• Warns swimmers of improper activities or danger and enforces pool regulations and water safety policies.
• Administers first aid in the event of injury, rescues swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administers CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary.
• Evaluates conditions for safety and initiates aquatics emergency action plan as required.
• Inspects pool facilities, equipment, and water to ensure that they are safe and usable.
• Supervises and assists in cleaning the pool and related facilities and equipment, assists with chemical tests and with records and charts of water tests and records of accidents. 

If you complete the training course and decide to work for WAC, you will be reimbursed the full amount if employed for 120 days. 

Candidates already certified or with previous experience, should have and up to date American Cross Certification 

Hours: Weekend and Weekdays, hours of employment of between 5:15am and 8:15pm. We have different shifts available so hours can vary. Dates for employment are for all seasons. We are looking for summer staff but are also looking for staff who would like to come as part time employees year round.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Monitor activities at aquatics facility to prevent accidents
• Provide assistance to swimmers
• Explain and enforce pool rules and regulations
• Participate in regular in-service training sessions
• Communicate with patrons at the pool, property management, and Continental
Pools management
Determine chlorine content and pH value of water, using water testing kit, and maintain chemical records
• Maintain facility cleanliness
• Other duties as assigned by supervisor
QUALIFICATIONS:
• Minimum age: 16 years
• Swim distance using crawl or breaststroke without resting: 100 yards
• Feet-first dive, retrieve a 10-lb brick from a minimum depth of 8 feet and bring ti to the surface
• Tread water without using arms for 1 minute
• Must possess strong communication skills

Description: The Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Conservation and Recreation, is Seeking High School Students who are interested in applying for Lifeguard Employment. 

DCR Summer Lifeguards are State Employees, receive $22/hour, accrued sick time, and the option to attend one of our Free Red Cross Lifeguard certification courses prior to hire. The first Free Red Cross Lifeguard certification class for 2024 summer employment will be during 2023 December School Vacation in Worcester.

Applicants must be 16 years old prior to June 15 2024, or before date of hire whichever comes first. We aim to fill our open positions before March so any students interested in Summer Employment should reach out soon. Our next Free Red Cross Lifeguard certification class is over February School Vacation in Worcester with additional options for classes in the Spring. 

DCR hires lifeguards for the following locations in Central MA:

In Worcester- Vernon Pool, Bennett Pool and Quinsigamond State Park

State Pools in- Milford, Fitchburg and Clinton

State Parks in- Gardner, Rutland, Winchendon, Hopkinton, Shutesbury

State Forests in- Leominster, Douglas, Erving

We are particularly seeking applicants who are either Dedicated Student Athletes, Compassionate Students looking to make a difference in the lives of others, Self-Motivated Students looking for a fun yet fulfilling outdoor summer job with good pay, OR Students seeking to build their resume for a future first responder/ medical career field or for college applications. Qualified applicants must be able to swim. Strong swimmers are preferred but our instructors can work with qualified applicants to improve where needed.
