Summer Reading Partners 2021

The goal of the Summer Reading program in Shrewsbury Public Schools is to foster a love of reading and encourage reading over the summer months.  We know that talking about what we are reading with others not only helps us to feel more connected to the text and to others, but it also strengthens reading comprehension by helping to deepen understanding.  

To this end, Shrewsbury Public Schools is offering a Summer Reading Partners program to rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students. Students who participate in the program will be matched with a high school student volunteer “partner”.  Their partner will touch base periodically over the summer to support students in making reading choices and staying engaged and on track with their reading.

Purpose:

• To develop connections between peers
• To provide encouragement and goal setting to stay on track with their reading goals
• To generate enthusiasm and engagement

* The summer reading buddies is not designed to function as a tutoring program that seeks to “teach” reading skills.  Connections will focus on engagement, connection, and idea sharing.

Who will participate?

Rising 7th, 8th, and 9th grade students who would enjoy and benefit from connecting with a Shrewsbury High School reading “partner”.  

High school participants are volunteers who are excited to share their love of reading and enthusiasm with a buddy! High School participants will be coached throughout the process to help them foster connection and help their buddies.  

When and how will the buddies connect?

Students will meet via an online video platform (Zoom or Google Meet) three times over the summer:

• Meet #1 - Week of June 21 - June 25
• Meet #2 - Week of July 19 - July 23
• Meet #3 - Week of August 16 - August 20

Students will also receive an email communication from their buddies just before school gets out, and again on the weeks of July 5th and August 2nd.
