School to Farm Initiative at Oak Middle School
Shrewsbury Public Schools recently partnered with The Home Depot in Shrewsbury in an effort to enhance Oak’s outdoor learning courtyard. The work was part of a district-wide grant Home Depot secured to help SPS schools develop or improve outdoor learning and vegetable growing spaces. Several students, staff members and community volunteers joined a crew from The Home Depot on Saturday, April 29th and worked to build new vegetable garden boxes, a new handicap accessible pathway, food refuse composters to help with our cafeteria trash that is bio-degradable, an improved pond ecosystem, and more seating. Improving Oak’s outdoor learning space will provide hands-on, project-based learning and community service opportunities in a safe and structured outdoor learning area.
Thank you to all who helped with this innovative farm-to-school project!
