OMS Physical Education Syllabus 2020-2021
The Physical Education Staff at Oak Middle School is looking forward to working with your child this year. We understand that this year will be a challenging year, but TOGETHER, we will get through it!!!!
Physical Education at Oak Middle School is for everyone regardless of what cohort group your child is in. It is our hope that we can provide an informative and FUN curriculum; one that will increase your child’s skill level, promote physical fitness and teach some elements of Mindfulness to help your child navigate through these stressful times.

Cohorts A, B, and C
*** All classes (in person or remotely are MANDATORY!!!!!)
In-Person Safety REQUIREMENTS
- Masks must always be worn!!!!
- Stay socially distant (6 feet apart!!!)
- Don't touch your mask or face!!!
- Use hand sanitizer before class and at the conclusion of class at the hand sanitizing station.
- Disinfect equipment both before AND after use.
***In-person Safety requirements will be discussed in great detail during the first few In-person experiences!!!!!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION FIELD
*** Due to the need of the gymnasium for lunches for social distancing purposes…..
- ALL PE CLASSES WILL BE HELD OUTSIDE!!!
- DURING INCLEMENT DAYS, PE CLASSES WILL BE HELD UNDER TENTS THAT WILL BE LOCATED OUTSIDE
- Students are asked to use the bathroom before going outside to the PE Field!!!!
CLOTHING:
- Due to the current pandemic, locker rooms are off limits and students will not be required to change for Physical Education class.
- Students are asked to wear comfortable clothes to school that they can be active in.
- Students are asked to wear sneakers, or have a pair of sneakers in their backpack, that they can wear during class. Backpacks will have a designated space off to the side.
- As the weather turns colder, please be prepared to go OUTSIDE during PE class (sweatshirts, hats, even gloves!!!!!)
- If a student is not prepared for class (no sneakers/inappropriate clothes) then they will receive a ZERO for the preparation aspect of that class.
STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED ONLY THREE (3) ZEROS FOR NOT BEING IN APPROPRIATE PE ATTIRE. AFTER THE THIRD ZERO, STUDENTS WILL RECEIVE WRITING ASSIGNMENTS THAT WILL NEED TO BE SIGNED BY A PARENT.
GRADES
- All Middle School students in Cohorts A, B, and C will receive a standards-based report card at the end of the quarter.
- Grades will be standards based with an assessment on HOWLS
- Demonstrates basic movement forms and some at the mastery level (skill).
- HOWLS – Habit of Work and Learning - RESPECT
- The following reasons will not hurt a student’s grade; legal absence from school, excused illness, injury or school sponsored activities.
MEDICAL EXCUSES
- The nurse, parent/guardian or physician must notify the physical education instructor if a student is to be excused from PE class. We request a written note on the day of the excused illness.
- If a note is not provided, the student will not receive credit for that class.
- If a student needs to be excused from Physical Education, and a note from a doctor was sent in, a note from the same doctor must be sent in to allow your child to re-join Physical Education.
- All students are encouraged to bring epi pens and inhalers to class.
SAFETY
- FOLLOW ALL IN-PERSON SAFETY REQUIREMENTS!!!!!!
- No gum or candy.
- Students must receive permission before leaving the playing PE field.
- Please report ALL injuries to the instructors.
- HORSEPLAY IS ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY NOT ALLOWED AND WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.
SCREENINGS FOR COHORT A, B, AND C.
Physical Education staff will also facilitate the recording of heights, weights in grades 1,4,7 and 10 and postural screening in grades 5-9 to assist the nurses and comply with health record requirements. In grades 1, 4, 7 and 10, height and weight screening data is used for state mandated BMI calculation and aggregate reporting. Individual student data is not reported. In order for students to be excused from any screening a parent must make that request in writing to the school nurse.
Cohort D (Remote ONLY)
*** All on-line remote classes are MANDATORY!!!!
- Cohort D will have a modified curriculum that is more appropriate for remote-only learners. This curriculum will mirror Cohorts A, B and C but will include activities and assignments that are more feasible in a fully remote environment.
