First Lego League Competition Results

The 17 FIRST LEGO League teams competed Sunday, December 2nd, at the WPI qualifier in Worcester. The Oak and Sherwood teams did a great job and won 5 awards overall, including the prestigious Champion’s Award. Three of the award winning teams will be attending the State Championship on December 15th.

The Champion’s Award is given to the team who receives the most award nominations from the judges while still ranking in the top 40% with their robot scores. This was won by the 8th grade team Blue Lightning #13775. For their project they designed a dopamine inducing package for astronauts living in space for an extended period of time. This was to help alleviate the depression that is likely to ensue from this. They ran scientific trials to obtain data on which flavors improve a person’s mood. For their robot design the team used a number of sensors and modular attachments, allowing them to write code to utilize them. The team also displays the ethos of FIRST, promoting an interest in STEM with demonstrations of their robot and joining the high school Robotics Team in a number of their outreach activities. All of this is achieved by strong teamwork, perseverance and hard work. This team definitely models the qualities we try to encourage in this program.
