MathCounts

Advisors:

Do you enjoy solving problems? Do you like to stretch your mind seeking elusive clues to mathematical puzzles?

Whether you like competitions or just want to have fun with math, you're invited to join MathCounts. We welcome new members as well as returning students.

This year we will have two MathCounts groups, one on Wednesdays and one on Fridays. Sign up in Powerschool for the day you are available. If you are available for both days, you should choose Wednesday if you want to focus less on competition prep and more just on problem solving. Both groups will have the chance to take part in the school competition in January.

Practices on both days will be from 2:30-3:30. Our first meetings will be on Wednesday Oct. 18 and Friday Oct. 20.

The $50.00 activity fee must be paid in order to signup online. New online payment information can be accessed through this link. Please choose only one day on the powerschool parent portal. Mathcouts-Wednesdays or Mathcounts-Fridays. Remember to click submit after you choose.

MATHCOUNTS in a Nutshell

MATHCOUNTS® is a national math enrichment, coaching & competition program that promotes middle school mathematics achievement in every U.S. state & territory. Celebrating its 25th anniversary, MATHCOUNTS is one of the most successful education partnerships involving volunteers, educators, industry sponsors & students.

President George W. Bush and former Presidents Clinton, Bush and Reagan have all recognized MATHCOUNTS in White House ceremonies. The MATHCOUNTS program has also received two White House citations as an outstanding private sector initiative. Particularly exciting for our Mathletes® were the hour-long ESPN programs on each of the National Competitions from 2003-2005. MATHCOUNTS materials challenge students & motivate them to develop strong math skills also participate in the MATHCOUNTS competition series.

Schools select students to compete individually or as part of a team in one of the more than 500 written & oral competitions held nationwide. Top students advance to the state, & ultimately, national level. MATHCOUNTS challenges students' math skills, develops their self-confidence & rewards them for their achievements.

Mission: The mission of MATHCOUNTS is to increase enthusiasm for and enhance achievement in middle school mathematics throughout the United States.

MATHCOUNTS will meet every Friday that there is school from September 30th until January (date to be determined) when the school competition is held. Once the school competition has been held, MATHCOUNTS will continue only for a more limited group of students who are seriously prepping for the chapter competition in February and then potentially for the state competition in March.

What exactly is in a competition?

MATHCOUNTS competitions are designed to be completed in approximately three hours. Each competition consists of four parts: the Sprint, Target, Team and Countdown rounds. The Sprint Round has 30 questions, and students have 40 minutes to complete them. The Target Round consists of 8 questions, which are distributed to the students two at a time. Students have 6 minutes to complete each pair of problems. The Team Round has 10 problems for the team to work together. The top 25% of individuals, up to a maximum of 10, proceed to the Countdown Round, an oral round in which students compete head-to-head.
