AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES PROGRAM

Registration for the winter session of ASAP is closed.  Classes will begin the week of January 7th.

Description: In this Yoga class students will have a safe space to discuss, learn, and practice yoga and mindfulness. Class will open with a breathing, mindfulness, or discussion activity. Class with flow into a series of yoga poses based off of the opening activity or theme. Students will then have an opportunity to reflect through journal work or an art activity. Class will end with some more poses, rest, and relaxation. The class format is based off of the teachings by Flow and Grow Kids Yoga. Yoga mats will be provided, students are also welcome to bring their own.

Description: Ever wondered how to make a Mandala? No worries! In this beginner level class you will learn how to use various dotting tools to make a perfect Mandala. The instructions and illustrations will walk you through each step, there will be some soothing music in the background for a perfect ambiance. It's a great way to simultaneously have fun, relax and train your mind to concentrate . We will be using Canvas, CD's, Card stocks and rocks to make some fun designs.

Description: "The “official” Hour of Code takes place during Computer Science Education week in early December. BUT who says that we have to limit it to one hour? This class will allow you to explore some websites, online courses, and apps that will allow you to independently learn to code! Please note, this class will be based on students teaching themselves (and classmates!) how to complete some coding tasks accessible on the iPad in a quiet, collaborative environment!"

Description: This class is for young inventors curious to learn the principles of design. Students will learn to use TinkerCAD by designing an object of their choice. They will receive feedback from classmates and teacher, and iterate on their design. Each student will leave class with at least one 3D-printed object. (This class is offered on two different days - please register for only one of the classes.)

Description: In this intro ceramics class students will explore the following hand building techniques: wedging, pinch pots, slab, score and slip, and coils. Students may create projects which include animal sculptures and a variety of vessels. All finished art will be sealed with food safe glaze.  Students who have taken this class before will be introduced to additional techniques.

Description: Tired of the same old video games and screen time? Join Boardgaming! Get together to play competitive, cooperative, and recreational board games. We will have an open and friendly environment for playing games, and meeting friends. Amateur, expert, or just a little curious, everyone is welcome to bring and play any board game they would like.

Description: Come share your love for art with other like-minded students. We will use the art room as an open studio to create whatever you want. You can use the time to get caught up on current projects or work on brand new ones based on your interests. I will help you develop ideas and build your skills. Furthermore, if art-related competitions such as Doodle 4 Google, Ikea plush toy contest or others are announced we can work on submissions if desired.

Description: Students will learn about the solid fundamentals, proper vocabulary and interactive strategies involved in chess, according to their skill level, which will further help them to increase their mental prowess, concentration and analytical skills.

Registration Instructions:

  • Log into the Parent Portal.
  • From the navigation menu on the left, select “Sports and Activities”
  • Choose the class you wish to take by clicking “Assign Fee”
  • From the navigation menu, select “Payment Center” and you will be redirected to School Pay
  • Your spot is not reserved until you have completed your payment.

Additional Information:

  • There is no transportation for this program. Students must be picked up promptly at 3:55
  • Classes are open to Sherwood Middle School students only.
  • Please note that the ASAP programs do not require the $50 district activity fee. You are only required to pay the fee associated with the activity. (The district activities fee does NOT cover this program.)
  • Classes will need to meet minimum enrollments (10 students) in order to take place. We will contact you ONLY if a class is cancelled.
  • There is no nurse on duty at the school during the after-school program.
  • We must be able to reach a parent/guardian or designated adult by phone that can immediately come to the school in case of an emergency or unacceptable behavior.
  • Classes only meet on days when school is in session. Classes will not meet on early release, vacation, holidays or parent conference days. Instructors will arrange for a make-up class for these days.
  • On occasion, a class may be cancelled the day of class. Students need to listen to announcements and check the after-school bulletin board by the main office. Parents WILL NOT be notified of day-to-day cancellations. After school plans should be in place for all students in case of cancellations.
  • If a class is cancelled due to weather or other circumstances, the instructor will arrange for a make-up date.
  • Expectations for appropriate student behavior are the same as during the school day. Students who do not behave appropriately may be asked to withdraw from the program.
  • There will be no refunds.
