Do you need to live in Shrewsbury to attend Shrewsbury Public Schools?

Yes.  The Town of Shrewsbury must be the legal residence of the parent/guardian and the student(s) in order to enroll in school at Shrewsbury Public Schools.

In accordance with the “School Choice Law” (M. G. L. c76 12B), the School Committee will vote before June 1st each year and notify the Department of Education on whether the Shrewsbury Public Schools will participate in School Choice for the following year.On March 16, 2022, the School Committee voted to not participate in interdistrict school choice for the 2022-2023 school year.

If warranted, residency checks may be conducted by the School Department or the Shrewsbury Police Department at any time during a child's enrollment in Shrewsbury Public Schools.

What are the required documents for registering a new student?

The following documents are required for student registration:

  • Student’s birth certificate
  • Student's passport (if not a US birth certificate)
  • Student's health records: immunization records & copy of last physical
  • Student's school records
  • School authorization form (grades 1-12)
  • Official high school transcript (grades 10-12)
  • Parent's photo ID: driver’s license, passport, or other valid government-issued ID
  • Proofs of residency (pick 3):
    • Signed lease agreement
    • Signed purchase & sale agreement
    • Property deed
    • Current year real estate tax bill
    • Bills dated within 30 days
      • SELCO
      • Gas
      • Propane
      • Oil
      • Water

If applicable, please also upload:

  • Individualized Educational Plan (IEP) documents
  • Section 504 Accommodation Plan documents
  • Guardianship or custody papers, or court orders

Which school will my child attend?

If your child is attending preschool (3-4 years old), they will attend either Parker Road Preschool or Little Colonials Preschool.

Students in grades K-4 attend the elementary school in their district (Beal, Coolidge, Floral, Paton, or Spring).  Click here to see the map to determine which district you live in.

Students in grades 5-6 attend Sherwood Middle School.

Students in grades 7-8 attend Oak Middle School.

Students in grades 9-12 attend Shrewsbury High School.

How old does my child have to be to enter Preschool, Kindergarten, or 1st Grade?

Prior to the start of the school year, children must be 5 years old by August 31st to enroll in Kindergarten and 6 years old by August 31st to enroll in 1st grade.

Also prior to the start of the school year, preschoolers must be 3 years old by August 31st to enroll in Parker Road Preschool or 3 years old by March 1st to enroll in Little Colonials.

How do I register for the PowerSchool Parent Portal?

The PowerSchool Parent Portal is a secure website that provides information and communication from the school.  Parents and guardians can use the website as a resource to view and update important information, including:

  • Update contact and demographic information
  • Sign up for busing and view bus times, numbers, and locations
  • View attendance, grades, and assignments
  • View and sign up for sports, music, languages, and activities
  • View summer books and assignments
  • View the Daily Bulletin
  • View the Student Handbook

After registering your student, you will receive information regarding how to set up your Parent Portal account.  You will need an Access ID and Access Password to create a new account or to add a child to your already existing account.  Parent Portal use and access is required of all parents and guardians.  Please see this sheet on how to create a Parent Portal account.  Please click here for more information about the PowerSchool Parent Portal.

Is transportation available for my student?

Bus registration and payment are done through the PowerSchool Parent Portal.  Bus stop, location, and time information will become available on the Parent Portal once registration is complete.

Transportation is available for grades K-12.  All students in grades K-6 who reside 2.0 miles or less from their school and all students in grades 7-12 are required to pay the fee.  Students in grades K-6 who reside 2.0 miles or further from their school and students who receive Free & Reduced lunch are not required to pay the bus fee.

Is financial aid available for lunches, bus fees, or tuition payments?

Free and reduced price meals are available to students if there is financial need.  Applications are available online.  More information can be found on our Food Services page. If you need help filling out the online application, please call the Food Service Office at (508) 841-8819.  Applications can be submitted at any time as the financial need arises.  Eligibility is governed by guidelines set by the USDA.  An email notification will be sent to all families stating what program they qualify for.

If approved from Free & Reduced Lunch, you may receive free busing.  For information about other forms of financial aid, such as for tuition payments, please contact your school directly.

Does my school offer extended care for before and after school?

The Extended Learning program provides extended school-day programs for students in grades K-6.

Before school care is offered for grades K-4 at all five elementary schools.  The program opens at 7:00 a.m. and finishes at the start of the school day.  After school care is offered for grades K-6.  Children are dismissed to the program from the schools at the end of the school day and care is provided until 6:00 p.m.

How can I pay for fees and bills?

You may make online payments through SchoolPay on the Parent Portal.  SchoolPay allows debit or credit card payment of food service bills, bus registration fees, and athletic and activity fees, among other fees and charges.  Please click here for more information about SchoolPay.

If you cannot pay for certain fees on SchoolPay or prefer to use check or cash, please bring your check or exact cash to the Central Office in the Shrewsbury Town Hall at 100 Maple Avenue.

What is Schoology and how do I use it?

Schoology is linked to the Parent Portal and is our learning management system that is used by all teachers and students at Sherwood Middle School, Oak Middle School, and Shrewsbury High School to post homework assignments and course resources.  It is also used by some elementary school teachers as a family communication tool.  You will receive information about your Schoology account and how to access it via the Parent Portal directly from your student’s school or teachers.  Please click here for more information about Schoology and how to create an account.
