Dear Floral Families,

This week, we’ve got homework in mind, and we’re hoping to get you and your children thinking about it, too.

Here’s how:

At-Home Project for Floral Goes Green (Optional):   One of our favorite learning traditions at Floral Street School is Floral Goes Green.  For families new to Floral, Floral Goes Green (or FGG) is a day in which all classrooms engage in learning experiences focused on the environment, both locally and globally, and the need to care for it through our words and actions.  This year’s FGG will take place during the day on Thursday, May 23 and will feature presentations and interactive learning stations led by Floral students as well as outside experts.

New this year, students are invited to work on a project at home and bring it in to school for display at FGG.  Does your child have a passion for exploring the outdoors? Protecting endangered species? Turning trash into treasures? Composting or recycling?  Advocating for water or land conservation? Attacking a pollution problem? Inspiring others to seek peace and joy in the beauty of nature? The topics are endless, and we want students to share their voices and take action to educate and inspire their peers.    If your child or family would like to work on a project from home to be displayed at FGG, please click HERE to learn more.

Improving Homework Practices in Shrewsbury:  The district is revisiting its current homework policy, which has been in place for a number of years and is due for a review. Please read the message below to learn more about how you can engage in an online conversation about our current practices and how the homework experience can improve for students in Shrewsbury.  Let the exchange begin! :)

Have a wonderful week.

~Lisa & Gina

Improving Homework Practices in Shrewsbury:  Your Input and Engagement is Needed

The district is excited to launch another open and interactive conversation using Thoughtexchange, an online survey tool. From April 29 to May 13, we want to hear from everyone- students, staff, parents and guardians- about homework.

The district’s current homework policy has been in place for a long time. As part of our district goals, we plan on revisiting our guidelines. We’ll start by gathering information from our school communities, and learning about your perspective is a key part of the process. The results of this exchange will inform the School Committee and other key stakeholders in advance of formal recommendations for changes this coming fall.

On Monday, you will receive an email inviting you to participate in an online discussion. We’re hoping that you will share your thoughts on what we’re doing well with homework- and how we can improve.  Fourth grade students will be providing their input at school.

Interested in learning more? These links will connect you to recent research, our current policy, and a video that explains our goals for the project.

COIN$ FOR KID$

This coming week, 4/29-5/3, The PTO is holding a “Coin$ for Kid$” coin collection drive. The goal is for students to realize, even by doing something small, they can make a difference in their school and have fun doing it. The funds raised will go toward enrichment programs and funds raised by the 4th grade classrooms will go toward their 4th grade celebration.

Here’s how COIN$ FOR KID$ works:

·      Each classroom will be provided a gallon container.

·      Students will place their coins in their homeroom container each day.

·      Each classroom that fills their container will win “Teacher’s Choice.” (This could be an extra recess, pajama day, or something else fun!)

IMPORTANT >>> In order to avoid lunch money, etc., ending up in the coin containers, please consider sending in coins in a clearly marked container that students can then empty into the class container.

All questions can be directed to the Floral PTO at Floralstreetpto@gmail.com

Staff Appreciation Week

May 5th-10th is staff appreciation week at Floral Street School, and we have many activities planned to show our staff just how much they are valued.

Join us on Sunday, May 5th from 4:00-5:00 PM outside the entrance to Floral to Chalk the Walk. Decorate the sidewalks with messages for your teachers and Floral staff. Chalk provided.

On Monday, send a note to a teacher or staff member in the lobby mailbox.
On Tuesday, wear your teacher’s favorite color. We will also be holding a staff sundae bar. To donate items, visit: https://bit.ly/2IQCdR5
On Wednesday, give a flower from your garden to a teacher or staff. Or, get creative and make your own.
On Thursday, spread some cheer by thanking a teacher of staff, paying them a compliment, or showing you appreciate them. We will also be providing a staff snack cart. To donate items, visit: https://bit.ly/2IQCdR5
On Friday, show your Team Floral spirit and wear Floral Street Spirit Wear or a “floral” print.

May PTO Meeting

Our next PTO meeting will be held on Wednesday, 4/30 from 6:15-7:15 in the Floral Media Center. Childcare will be provided.

Notes from Previous Falcon Flyers:

Third Grade Meet-Up with Mr.Wilson at the Worcester Art Museum

Mr. Wilson, one of our two art teachers at Floral school, uses the close proximity and educational offerings of the Worcester Art Museum often in his art curriculum. Throughout the past few years he organizes what he calls 'A Meet Up'  for his students and their families on the free admission Sundays at the Worcester Art Museum. The meet-ups are totally optional and offered as an opportunity to visit the museum and continue student's art education outside of school.

This year the second graders were invited to a 'meet up' at the museum to see the historic 'Waterloo Bridge' series by Claude Monet.  Next month the third graders and their families are invited to another museum 'meet-up' on free admission day Sunday, May 5th to visit the Colonial American Portrait Gallery. Students and their families can meet Mr. Wilson between the hours of 10:00 AM to noon in the gallery and look at the famous portraits the students studied and referenced as a project in art class. Ask any third grader and don't be surprised if they can name more than one Colonial American portrait painter.

Art Festival on May 4th

Mark your calendars and take your family on a trip to Sherwood Middle School on Saturday, May 4 to view the creative artwork on display by our talented student artists in Grades K-8.
