Dear Floral Families,

One of our district’s Strategic Priorities, Enhanced Well-Being of All, has us thinking a lot about developing  our students social emotional skills and competencies through explicit teaching and modeling in classrooms and schoolwide.  One area of student and staff wellness that we at Floral are exploring as a school community this year is mindfulness. Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment - mind and body - without judgement.  It takes a lot of practice to be mindful because our brains can wander away so easily from the present moment. Often, those wandering thoughts can lead to worries...about things that have happened in the past or things that haven’t even happened yet.  With mindfulness, we work to train our brains to notice all that’s happening in the moment. This practice can lead to decreased stress and increased joy and gratitude for those simple things in our lives that can easily seem to pass us by or be taken for granted.

Every Monday at Floral we all practice a Monday Mindful Moment together.  It takes place during morning announcements and takes just a couple of minutes.  As a community, we all take a moment to focus on our breathing and pay attention to what we’re hearing, feeling, and noticing in that moment.  Sometimes our Mindful Moment will include a specific breathing practice, like heart and belly breathing or square breathing. Other times, we may focus on a gratitude practice, where we bring to mind someone or something that we love.  Many teachers are using various mindfulness practices with their students throughout the day as well. Taking a “purposeful pause” in our busy day to take a breath, focus in on the present, and feel positive and empowered to have our “body and brain in the group.”  Ask your child to show you one practice from a Monday Mindful Moment at school. Take it one step further and try treating yourself to your own mindful moment- you deserve it! :)

Have a wonderful week.

~Lisa & Gina
