Floral ASAP

Floral After School Activities Program

Registration for the March ASAP session is closed.  Information about the current classes is listed below as a reference, we are no longer registering students for these classes.

  • All classes will run at Floral from 3:30-4:30 for six weeks, beginning the week of March 4th

  • Cost:  $40

  • You may choose one Wednesday class and/or one Thursday class, but please do not register for two classes on the same day because classes run simultaneously

Wednesday Classes

Class: Explore Our Solar System - Sorry, class is full
Grades: 1, 2
Time: Wednesday 3:30-4:30
Dates: 3/6, 3/13, 3/20, 3/27, 4/3, 4/10
Instructor: Ms. Mertzanis and Ms. Butler
Class Size:  20
Description: Students will learn about the stars and planets in our solar system.  They will discover what makes day and night, what constellations are, how powerful the sun’s light is by making a sun fading print, and at the end of the session, they will design and make their own planet!

Description: Interested in making up your own music? Want to write some music for recorder and classroom percussion instruments? Would you enjoy putting your creation into music notation software? Then this ASAP class might be just what you are looking for! Join us for 6 weeks of creating in the Music Room!

Class Size:  12 students
Description: “Chess is a gymnasium of mind”.The students will learn about fundamentals, vocabulary, various strategies and traps involved in chess according to their skill level which will help them to improve their mental prowess, focus and analytical skills.The students will also learn how to do checkmates in the endgame, how to make plans and to look beyond the obvious.The students who have attended this program in the past will get new opportunities to build up their skills and to take it to the next level.

Description: This class will involve a variety of stem activities for students to create and make with a curious mind.  Students will have an opportunity to use a variety of hands on projects including legos, snap circuits and coding.  Students will go through the steps of the engineer design process and be actively involved in their learning.  Legos will involve the design and creation of a structure that will have a purpose.  Snap circuits will involve students gaining knowledge about electrical circuits by designing a variety of different models.  Coding will involve using the ipad for problem solving and creativity using coding apps.

Class: Cribbage and Cards
Grades: 4
Time: Thursday 3:30-4:30
Dates: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11
Instructor: Ms. Spangenberg
Class Size: 12
Description: Would you like to grow your brain by learning a traditional card game? Cribbage is an exciting race to the finish between partners. It uses mental math strategies to find combinations of points. Cribbage was invented by the British over 300 years ago. You don’t need to know how to play card games to sign up for this course. If you’re a fourth grader at Floral Street School, join in the fun with Mrs. Spangenberg and build your math skills in the process.

Class Size:  15 students
Description: Sketching is a great way to learn art and have fun. In "Let's Go Sketching" students will make a small sketch book, or bring one in from home, and sketch inside the school and outside on nice days. Drawing tools will be pencils, pens, and colored pencils. This class is designed to develop personal style and feel confident about how you draw.

Description: Everyone loves the stage! This program offers students the chance to take a reading selection and bring it to life through expression of voice and body. Reader’s Theatre promotes working partnerships, strengthens comprehension, and increases fluency. Furthermore… IT’S FUN! Participants will perform for a small audience on the last night of our 6 week session. (Students will perform different selections than the January ASAP course.)

Class: Lego Engineering Design Exploration - sorry, class is full
Grades: 1, 2
Time: Thursday 3:30-4:30
Dates: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11

Class Size: 10
Description: This class will investigate different shapes in order to determine which structure you build with Lego will work the best. Students will test results from their investigation, design and redesign to construct the structure.  Investigations involve designing and testing walls, bridges, towers, chairs, houses and boats all made of Lego. You will be inspired by engineers who work for Lego and artists who create with Lego. Have fun while learning the engineer design process.

ClassRobotics Programming and Coding - Sorry, class is full
Grades: 1, 2, 3, 4 - new students only

Dates: 3/7, 3/14, 3/21, 3/28, 4/4, 4/11

Class Size: 10   
Description: Students will learn programming in a fun and interactive way using app-enabled robots! Through the Sphero Edu and Wonder Workshop programs, students will learn how to code, incorporating robotics and technology with collaborative STEAM activities. This hands on class will develop essential 21st century skills and engage students to work collaboratively to learn how to problem solve and program robots, igniting curiosity and confidence through play. Note: this class is only for students who are new to coding and robotics. Please do not register for this class if your child has previously taken a similar class.

Additional Information

  • Students are supervised in the gym from 3:15-3:30, prior to the start of class
  • There is no transportation provided for this class.  Parents must pick up their child in the Floral lobby promptly at 4:30
  • Students who are enrolled in extended day will be brought to the cafeteria after class and you may pick them up from ESC as you normally would
  • Class fees are non-refundable.  Credit will not be given if your child misses a class.  If a class is cancelled (for inclement weather or teacher illness) we will make every effort to offer a make-up class on a different date

  • Log into the Parent Portal.
  • From the navigation menu on the left, select “Sports and Activities”
  • Choose the class you wish to take by clicking “Assign Fee”
  • From the navigation menu, select “Payment Center” and you will be redirected to School Pay
  • Your spot is not reserved until you have completed your payment.

The Floral After School Activities Program (ASAP) offers hour-long classes that run once a week after school for 6 weeks.  Anticipated program dates for the 2018-2019 school year are:
Session 1:  October 1- November 9
Session 2: January 7 - February 15
Session 3:  March 4 - April 12
Session 4:  April 29 - June 7

Each class costs $40. Class titles vary depending on the interests and availability of the teachers.

Classes are only open to the students enrolled at Floral. Information about the classes will be posted here, and will be included in the principal's weekly email to parents.
