Floral After School Activities Program

Information for January session
 

  • All classes will run at Floral from 3:30-4:30 for six weeks

  • Cost:  $40

  • You may choose one Wednesday class and/or one Thursday class, but please do not register for two classes on the same day because classes run simultaneously

Class: Books Come Alive! - just a few spots left
Grades: 1, 2
Time: Wednesday 3:30-4:30

Class Size:  20
Description: We will read one book per week and do a STEM activity or craft that goes with the theme of each book.  Students will try to build a bridge that holds 21 (miniature) elephants, estimate how many objects are in a jar, see if their sense of smell is as good as a honeybee’s…and more!

Grades: 3, 4
Time: Thursday 3:30-4:30

Description: Do you want to learn how to play the ukulele that is sitting around in your house? Come and learn how to strum chords and play some simple songs! Bring your ukulele or borrow one from Ms. Martino and have some ukulele fun!

Description: Calling all fourth graders! Would you like to grow your math brain by playing card games? Cribbage uses mental math strategies to find combinations of points. Learn to play cribbage and other games in this exciting club. You will build math skills and have fun doing it!

Class Size:  12 students
Description: Students will learn about the solid fundamentals, proper vocabulary and interactive strategies involved in chess, according to their skill level, which will further help them to increase their mental prowess, concentration and analytical skills.

Description: This class will involve a variety of hands-on STEM activities for curious minds! Students will go through the steps of the engineer design process and be actively involved in their learning.  Using Legos they will design and create a structure that will have a purpose.  They will use snap circuits to gain knowledge about electrical circuits.  They will also use coding apps on the iPads to solve problems creatively.  (Please choose either the Wednesday or the Thursday session, but not both.)

Description:  Learn basic signs to communicate in American Sign Language! We will learn how to sign our name, how to communicate basic signs with someone who is deaf, and even learn how to sign the verse to popular songs!

Description: Everyone loves the stage! This program offers students the chance to bring a reading selection to life through expression of voice and body. Reader’s Theatre promotes working partnerships, strengthens comprehension, and increases fluency.  Furthermore… IT’S FUN! Participants will perform for a small audience on the last night of our 6 week session.

Description: Students will learn programming in a fun and interactive way using app-enabled robots! Through the Sphero Edu and Wonder Workshop programs, students will learn how to code, incorporating robotics and technology with collaborative STEAM activities. This hands on class will develop essential 21st century skills and engage students to work collaboratively to learn how to problem solve and program robots, igniting curiosity and confidence through play. Note: this class is only for students who are new to coding and robotics. Please do not register for this class if your child has previously taken a similar class.

Additional Information

  • Students are supervised in the gym from 3:15-3:30, prior to the start of class
  • There is no transportation provided for this class.  Parents must pick up their child in the Floral lobby promptly at 4:30
  • Students who are enrolled in extended day will be brought to the cafeteria after class and you may pick them up from ESC as you normally would
  • Class fees are non-refundable.  Credit will not be given if your child misses a class.  If a class is cancelled (for inclement weather or teacher illness) we will make every effort to offer a make-up class on a different date

Registration Instructions:

  • Log into the Parent Portal.
  • From the navigation menu on the left, select “Sports and Activities”
  • Choose the class you wish to take by clicking “Assign Fee”
  • From the navigation menu, select “Payment Center” and you will be redirected to School Pay
  • Your spot is not reserved until you have completed your payment.

The Floral After School Activities Program (ASAP) offers hour-long classes that run once a week after school for 6 weeks.  Anticipated program dates for the 2018-2019 school year are:
Session 1:  October 1- November 9
Session 2: January 7 - February 15
Session 3:  March 4 - April 12
Session 4:  April 29 - June 7

Each class costs $40. Class titles vary depending on the interests and availability of the teachers.

Classes are only open to the students enrolled at Floral. Information about the classes will be posted here, and will be included in the principal's weekly email to parents.
