1, 2 Little Books, Big Feelings An engaging summer class designed to help young learners explore and understand their emotions through the magic of literature and art-making. Through carefully selected chidrens books that focus on emotions, empathy, and self-expression, each session will include a themed story followed by discussions. 1, 2 Stories in the Sky When you look into the night sky do you see just shinny dots or can you see a bear or a dragon, a lion or a dog? We'll explore the wonderful world of constellations in the night sky and the stories from around the world that they hold. You'll have the opportunity to create your own constellation and the story about it. We'll even explore telescopes and how to use them. Come and discover the magical world above us. Children will be able to build freely with our large collection of Legos, or follow step-by-step directions with traditional Lego kits. 1, 2, 3, 4 Mad Scientists Get your lab coat ready and come join us for mad scientists. This class will be packed full of experiments, sure to get you excited for the fun world of science. Using the scientific method, we will  observe, research, make predictions, test our experiments and record our findings. 2, 3, 4 The Problem Solving and Design Process Problem Solving and Design is back with all new challenges including making a 3D model of a circular bedroom for a lighthouse! Participants will use problem solving skills by following the process of identifying a problem, brainstorming possible solutions, planning the solution, creating the solution, testing it out and revising it to make it better.  Participants will then present their solutions to the rest of the group.  A new problem will be presented each day and the design process can be documented in a journal for participants to take home with them. 3, 4 Girls Just Wanna Have Fun: Sport, Exercise and Dance Edition Calling all girls! We are just two girls who enjoy sports, exercise and dance and we want you to join us this week. 3, 4, 5 Engineering Design Challenge - Elementary In this class we will explore the different disciplines of the engineering world.  We will do this by using the Engineering Design Process to design, create, test, and improve prototypes.  Students will learn the basics of forces and energy by working on a new engineering challenge each day.  Topics include space, thermal energy, earthquake proof structures, and more.  All new challenges! 3, 4, 5 Navigating Our Emotions Through Play and Mindfulness This course offers the perfect balance of play, outdoor activities, and emotional management. Students will explore how to navigate their emotions when things don't go as planned or when their expectations are not met. They will learn various techniques to channel their emotions through mindfulness practices such as writing, coloring, drawing, breathing exercises, yoga, and developing mindful awareness. These activities will help students cool down and become more attuned to their bodies' needs. Additionally, students will engage in interactive games with their peers, allowing them to naturally develop problem-solving skills and learn to manage their reactions in the moment. The course will also provide strategies for cooling down both our bodies and minds after physical activity. 3, 4, 5, 6 Kids Can Ukulele! Whether you have your own ukulele or not, come this summer to learn the history of the ukulele, how to care for an ukulele, and how to play the ukulele. This class is for any student who loves music. Come and learn folk songs and pop songs to sing and play along to. Ukuleles are provided for all participants to use during the course. 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 Quiz Mania Showcase Quiz mania Showcase is a learning course where fun meets knowledge. This course is ideal for students who wants to improve their general knowledge, thinking power, retention and memory. It includes buzzer-beater quiz games relating to world geography, country flags, entertainment, and more.  We'll also have mystery puzzles, riddles, trivia, spot the differences, spot the correct logo, guess the emoji and other fun activites. 4, 5 Paper Quilling Designs Does your child enjoy learning new crafts? Join us as we learn the art of paper quilling. We will create beautiful works of art using colorful paper strips. 4, 5, 6 STEM Activities and Stations STEM activities spark student’s creativity, inspire critical thinking, and develop 21st century skills. This course will allow students to rotate through a variety of STEM-themed centers to develop and enhance these skills, while collaborating and cooperating with other students, and reflecting on their ideas. Stations include: Coding Challenges with Dash and Dot robots, STEM Improv (creating designs based on randomly assigned materials, objects, and tasks), 8 Ways to Use… (designing creative uses for everyday objects), and Analyze This vs. That (comparing and contrasting functions of a design and designing a more perfect design!) 4, 5, 6, 7 Sewing Arts & Crafts Using needles, thread and fabric, kids can create their own stuffed animals. We'll start the week learning basic stiches while creating a small pin-cushion to hold our sewing needles, and then we'll apply our new skills to making animals. Sewing promotes motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and creativity, and students get satisfaction of making something with their own hands. 4, 5, 6, 7 STEM Around The World Take a trip around multiple continents with us! During our "travels" we will discover some of the world's greatest landmarks and accomplishments. Each day teams will work to complete 2-3 STEM challenges related to the various landmarks.  Can you create a dam that could stop the Colorado River? Build a wall like the Great wall of China? 5, 6 Build-it Bonanza Let your child’s imagination go wild! Build-it Bonanza offers a wide variety of building materials such as Lincoln Logs, Keva Planks, Knex, Magna tiles and more, for creative designs and construction. 5, 6, 7, 8 Yarn Creations In this fun class students will be introduced to the fiber arts with a focus on learning how to use yarn in a variety of ways to create crafts with supplies that can be found at home. Students will create a variety of crafts and explore different techniques including (but not limited to): finger knitting, making pom-poms, loom knitting with popsicle sticks, yarn wrapped letters, God’s eyes, and so much more!  We will have fun using yarn in creative ways to make fun projects that can easily be made at home on their own. 6, 7, 8 Printmaking Mania    Printmaking is an ancient form of art that is just as fun today as it was thousands of years ago. Students will create block prints using both Soft-Kut and linoleum and will also make mono prints with Gelli plates. Students will learn how to carve, ink, and print their ideas using a variety of colors and on various types of papers. 6, 7, 8 The Physics of the 2024 Summer Olympics The 2024 Paris Olympics are right around the corner!  Many of the games in the olympics provide interesting and relatable platforms for students to study physics.  This course will provide middle school students the opportunity to access physics content in an engaging manner by studying the mechanics of sport in the classroom and then applying their knowledge in practice outside the classroom.  Power, energy, forces, Newton’s Laws, inertia, rotation, aerodynamics, and kinematics are all physics concepts that can be more relatable and interesting when students are able to apply these concepts to golf, gymnastics, track and field, swimming and diving, rowing, basketball, archery and more! 5, 6 LeadHERship Welcome to LeadHERship Camp (formerly You Go, Girl), one of ShrewsburyYouth and Family Services’ most popular programs. This full-day program focuses on the concerns, hopes, dreams and goals of middle school girls by discussing the important changes they are experiencing during this critical time in their lives. They will learn how to strengthen their self- confidence, manage emotions, and communicate better with friends and family members. There will be plenty of practice in decision-making and problem-solving too !They will learn how being healthy will help them become the person they are meant to be. We have included ways to stay drug-free and help others stay drug- free. Finally, they will practice setting goals and thinking about ways to make the most of themselves! 3, 4 Little Books, Big Feelings An engaging summer class designed to help young learners explore and understand their emotions through the magic of literature and art-making. Through carefully selected chidrens books that focus on emotions, empathy, and self-expression, each session will include a themed story followed by discussions. 3, 4 Stories in the Sky When you look into the night sky do you see just shinny dots or can you see a bear or a dragon, a lion or a dog? We'll explore the wonderful world of constellations in the night sky and the stories from around the world that they hold. You'll have the opportunity to create your own constellation and the story about it. We'll even explore telescopes and how to use them. Come and discover the magical world above us. 3, 4 Yarn Creations In this fun class students will be introduced to the fiber arts with a focus on learning how to use yarn in a variety of ways to create crafts with supplies that can be found at home. Students will create a variety of crafts and explore different techniques including (but not limited to): finger knitting, making pom-poms, loom knitting with popsicle sticks, yarn wrapped letters, God’s eyes, and so much more!  We will have fun using yarn in creative ways to make fun projects that can easily be made at home on their own. 3, 4, 5 Creative Writing Grab your journals and come join us for Creative Writing, a fun and engaging class for young minds to develop their writing skills. The class is designed to spark imagination and encourage students to express themselves through the written word. We will cover different genres of writing such as fiction, poetry, and non-fiction, allowing students to explore and find their own writing style. They will also learn about the writing process, from brainstorming ideas to editing and revising their work. 3, 4, 5 Navigating Our Emotions Through Play and Mindfulness This course offers the perfect balance of play, outdoor activities, and emotional management. Students will explore how to navigate their emotions when things don't go as planned or when their expectations are not met. They will learn various techniques to channel their emotions through mindfulness practices such as writing, coloring, drawing, breathing exercises, yoga, and developing mindful awareness. These activities will help students cool down and become more attuned to their bodies' needs. Additionally, students will engage in interactive games with their peers, allowing them to naturally develop problem-solving skills and learn to manage their reactions in the moment. The course will also provide strategies for cooling down both our bodies and minds after physical activity. Laugh, compete and bond like never before as your team immerses themselves in the spirit of fun and camaraderie. Discussions at the end of each activity highlight how the group and individuals have improved and the many ways in which these experiences will carry over into their daily lives. 4, 5, 6 Lego Club Design. Construct. Create. Let your imagination soar. Children will be able to build freely with our large collection of Legos, or follow step-by-step directions with traditional Lego kits. There will be daily building challenges, Lego trivia, and Lego-themed games to play. Come make new friends or catch up with old friends! On the last day there will be a Lego movie and a popcorn snack. 4, 5, 6, 7 Sewing Arts & Crafts Using needles, thread and fabric, kids can create their own stuffed animals. We'll start the week learning basic stiches while creating a small pin-cushion to hole our sewing needles, and then we'll apply our new skills to making animals. Sewing promotes motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and creativity, and students get satisfaction of making something with their own hands. Come learn about Theodor Geisel the person, artist, and author while creating art in the spirit of Seuss! 5, 6, 7, 8 Introduction to 3D Modeling and 3D Printing Students will use the Tinkercad app to learn how to create models that can be successfully 3D printed. Emphasis will be placed on designing great models with 3D printing in mind. Students will visit the Oak Middle School makerspace to learn how 3D printers work, and they will leave the week with multiple 3D printed objects that they created. 6, 7, 8 Crochet Granny Square Blanket  It gets cold in New England and who doesn't love a good blanket?  In this class students will learn to crochet a granny square blanket. 6, 7, 8 Environmental Engineers  Does your child like solving problems?!  This class is designed to get students to think outside the box and help solve environmental problems through the engineering process.  Students will be presented with a specific environmental issue and learn the dynamics of the environment before being challenged with fixing the problem.  Students will be designing smart cities, cleaning polluted water and designing windmills!  This is a hands-on, engaging class where students will be the problem-solvers of current environmental issues.  PLEASE NOTE: This class is offered more than once this summer and the content will be identical.  Students should only register for one session. 6, 7, 8 Ultimate Frisbee Fun Come learn to play one of the fastest growing team sports in the country!  Ultimate Frisbee combines concepts of football, basketball and soccer (and sportsmanship!) to produce an exciting non-contact sport.  Shrewsbury High School physics teacher, current ultimate frisbee player and former coach of the Holy Cross ultimate Frisbee team will combine drills and fun games to teach your child how to play this new and exciting sport!  July 8-11 12:00-3:00 Patrick Collins
