Update & Reminder from the Superintendent - May 28, 2021

Dear Shrewsbury Families, Colleagues, & Community Members,

As we head into Memorial Day Weekend, please note that the town is holding a virtual Memorial Day ceremony on Monday to honor those who died in service of the United States, which you can watch on SELCO channels 28 & 328 at 9:30am, 3:00pm, 7:00pm, & 10:00pm and viewed on the Shrewsbury Media Connection's YouTube channel.

This past Wednesday, the School Committee recognized four members of the SHS Speech & Debate team who earned state and national championships! Congratulations to Reeya Kansra, national champion in Humorous Interpretation; Shalini Biju, state champion in both Original Oratory and Informative Speaking; Rithika Prasad, state champion in Extemporaneous Speaking; and Dheekshitha Sriram, state champion in Big Questions Debate!

The School Committee also honored this year's SHS Senior Scholars, who are the highest ranked students academically in the SHS Class of 2021.  Congratulations to the following students (in alphabetical order): Ridha Alam, Nivedhya Cheruvari, Frances Crosby, Aashirwad Deochakke, Alyssa Guo, Aryan Kale, David Lee, Collin Lovelace, Nicole Podlipec, Divya Raghunathan, and Saanvi Sood.  You can read about their significant accomplishments and future plans here.

Finally, please be reminded that the online community exchange regarding the SHS mascot continues through Monday.  If you already participated, please consider visiting the exchange again at https://tejoin.com/scroll/337814004 to read and rate new thoughts that have been added.  A summary of reasons given for changing, updating, or keeping the mascot is also available in the introduction section of the exchange. Additionally, in response to some questions that have come up in the exchange, please click on the following link to read details about the origin of the SHS Colonials nickname:

The SHS Mascot Ad Hoc Study Group will be reviewing the feedback provided in the exchange in preparation for its presentation to the School Committee on June 9.  The School Committee intends to receive additional public feedback at its meeting on June 16 and make a determination of whether to take any action relative to the mascot at its meeting on June 23.

Thank you for your continued support of our students, and I wish you all an enjoyable long weekend despite the iffy weather.

Respectfully,

Joe Sawyer
