Dear Shrewsbury Families & Colleagues,
I am communicating updates to you through this email and this nine-minute video message, which focuses on the plans for recognizing our graduates in the Class of 2020.
Please note:
1) Yesterday, SHS Principal Todd Bazydlo and I sent a plan to senior students in the Class of 2020 and their families with information about how SHS is recognizing them in alternative ways, since the traditional senior events and graduation cannot be held due to public health requirements. Please click here for the entire plan and click here for the "schedule-at-a-glance" of the events. We look forward to honoring our graduates while working within the guidelines we must follow to protect the health of our community. One of these events, the SHS Scholarships & Awards Night, is being broadcast TONIGHT at 7:00pm on SELCO Channels 29/329 and streamed live on the Shrewsbury Media Connection website here. It will also be available on the SMC YouTube channel in the future.
2) Congratulations to our Shrewsbury High School E-Sports teams, who once again won both Massachusetts State E-Sports titles earlier this afternoon! SHS remains the only state champion school since the state e-sports high school league began, with a total of seven state titles in League of Legends and Rocket League. Can you say dynasty? Congratulations to our e-sports athletes and Coach Steve McKinstry on their unbelievable level of success!
3) Don't forget to log your minutes of physical activity as we attempt to reach the goal for our community to complete 2,002,000 minutes of physical activity during the month of May to honor the great SHS Class of 2020. Click here to check out the SHS Physical Education faculty's promotional video and click here for the link to quickly log your minutes (you can make entries for previous days as well). We've hit the 500,000 mark, but we need your help to reach our goal: Let's keep it going, Colonials!
A reminder that there are no remote learning sessions on Monday as we observe the Memorial Day holiday to honor those who gave their lives on behalf of our nation. While it is disappointing that our town's traditional Memorial Day observances, including the parade, are canceled due to the pandemic, look for a prerecorded Memorial Day program that will be broadcast on SELCO public access television and social media platforms (see information here).
I hope everyone has an enjoyable holiday weekend while staying healthy.
Respectfully,
Joe Sawyer
Superintendent of Schools
