School Closure Extended for Remainder of Year

Dear Shrewsbury Families & Colleagues,

By now you have likely heard the news that Gov. Baker extended his order to close all schools through the end of the academic year due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

While this situation is disappointing for us all, it is clear that the health issues related to COVID-19 are not going to be resolved in time to safely resume school operations this academic year, and that the Baker-Polito Administration made a judicious decision that focuses on what's most important: our Commonwealth's collective health and well-being.

Now that this decision has been made, we have certainty that remote learning will remain in place for the remainder of this school year, and that alternative plans will need to be made for various elements of our program, including things such as high school graduation.  The Department of Elementary & Secondary Education has indicated that it will be issuing updated guidance to local school districts later this week.  In the meantime, there will be a School Committee meeting tomorrow evening (Wednesday, April 22) at 7:00pm where the district administration will provide another update regarding our ongoing response to the COVID-19 school closure.  You can watch this meeting live on SELCO Channels 29 & 329 and stream it live on the Educational Access Live Stream on the Shrewsbury Media Connection (direct link here, or go to www.shrewsburymediaconnection.org and click on "livestreams").

Thank you for your continued efforts and support as we navigate this unprecedented, challenging time together.

Respectfully,

Joe Sawyer
Superintendent of Schools
