Dear Shrewsbury Families,
Based on the forecast for temperature and relative humidity both overnight and tomorrow, we expect that conditions inside our non-climate controlled buildings will move into the "extreme caution" range of the heat index by midday tomorrow. As a result, I have decided that tomorrow (Tuesday, June 8) will be an early release day for all Shrewsbury Public Schools according to the schedule below.
School nurses reported that some students who had difficulty with today's heat did not eat any breakfast and did not drink water before coming to school, so we ask for your assistance with this.
Please note:
All schools will follow the early release schedule regardless of the school’s climate control infrastructure, due to shared bus schedules and families with multiple children in different schools
The early dismissal schedule will be the same as traditional early release days:
SHS: 11:00am
Oak & Sherwood: 11:35am
Coolidge, Floral Street, Paton, & Spring Street: 12:15pm
Beal: 12:30pm
Parker Road Preschool/Little Colonials: no afternoon sessions
Students will be able to take a “grab and go” lunch when dismissed; lunch will not be served at school
Students will work on any required homework assignments after school but will not be required to attend any live remote classes via Zoom in the afternoon
We are within the state guidelines for instructional time and this early release will not require any making up of the time at the end of the year
After school activities such as athletics will continue as scheduled unless otherwise communicated, and these will follow established heat protocols
Thank you for your understanding and your flexibility with yet another challenge this school year.
Respectfully,
Joe Sawyer
Superintendent of Schools
