Spring Street Link
February 4, 2019
In continuing our work towards our goal of improving student learning, time is spent during weekly teacher meeting times looking at a variety of student work, assessing their progress towards meeting their learning goals, and determining when necessary, how and when will students who have not met our expectations have additional opportunities for re-teaching and learning. Throughout the course of the week, these students will work with classroom teachers, special education teachers, instructional aides, tutors, and even family and community volunteers to participate in direct instruction or extra practice targeting the goal area. Students will then be given the opportunity to demonstrate their learning by participating in a brief assignment, task, or some other type of informal assessment that will determine how each student has progressed.
This routine takes place mostly across reading, writing, and math. One of the observations that we make during our math analysis is our students’ ability to perform basic math tasks, apply the skills and knowledge in ways that have been modeled and practiced in classrooms, and even apply these skills and concepts to ‘novel’ situations or problems that have not been directly practiced. Although not all students are at the ‘novel’ level, we are seeing students attempting to problem solve with a framework that demonstrates an understanding how to approach the problem, understand what the problem is asking, using resources and strategies to plan and represent the problem, solve, and finally checking work.
We are very confident this teacher collaboration time will continue to support our students in meeting the very high learning expectations we have for all as well as providing valuable information to us on how we can support the learning needs of our students. It goes without saying, that without the expert instruction of our teachers as well as the support from our instructional aides, tutors, parent and community volunteers, and families making learning a priority at home, our students’ progress and growth would not be as strong as it is. We thank you for your continued support.

Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is a volunteer organization made up of parents and caregivers whose children receive special education services through the Shrewsbury Public Schools. We provide a forum for parents and caregivers to share experiences and exchange information. Together, we work for understanding, respect, support and the appropriate education of all children with special needs in our community.
Spring Street School PTO Direct Donation Campaign
The PTO is excited to sponsor many wonderful programs and events for your children and our community this year. We hope that you will consider making a contribution to our Direct Donation Campaign. Your support allows the PTO, a non-profit organization, to continue to provide community events, enrichment activities and the purchase of supplies and materials that are not included in the annual school budget for Spring Street School. If you would like to make a donation today, you can donate online at: https://squareup.com/store/spring-street-parent-teachers-organization-inc
Volunteering Requirement-CORI Checks
Anyone volunteering at our school must participate in the Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check before volunteering. Volunteering includes classroom volunteering, field trips, field day, etc. Once a CORI check has been completed, your ‘CORI’ is valid for 3 years. CORI checks are applicable to any volunteering in the Shrewsbury Public Schools. Unfortunately, CORIs completed elsewhere are not valid for Shrewsbury Public Schools. This link can be used to access the form. Please return the completed form in person to Mrs. Judith Adair, our secretary, with your license for the CORI to begin being processed. Please allow for at least 2 weeks for CORI checks to be completed before participating in any volunteer activities at our school. Volunteers without a completed and processed CORI will be unable to volunteer until the process is complete. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
