Join us for a fun-filled week of classes in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics.

Who:  All Shrewsbury Public School Students in grades K-8
When:  Tuesday April 18th - Friday April 21st
Where:  Sherwood Middle School
Cost:  $75 per class

Time: The morning session runs 8:30AM-11:30AM and the afternoon session runs 12:00PM-3:00PM. You may register for one or both sessions. Students registering for two classes may stay for a supervised lunch period from 11:30-12:00 (please provide your own lunch as there will be no food service available.)

How to register:  Course offerings are listed below. Click on the name of the class you wish to take to access the registration form. (Each class has it's own registration.) Classes will automatically close when filled. Once you've registered, you will receive a confirmation email with payment information.

Drop-off Procedures: Please park your car and enter Sherwood with your student through the main entrance.  Students will report to the gym where they will check in, meet their teacher and be guided to their class location. 

Pick-up Procedures: Parents must park and enter the building to pick up their child. Teachers will bring students to the gym at the end of class and will ask you to sign out your child before leaving.

COURSE OFFERINGS

MORNING CLASSES

Class Name: Create Your Own Graphic Novel - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: 3-8 - now open to grades 3 & 4!
Instructor: Brett Corey

Description: This class will allow students to create their own graphic novel. This can be done using their own artistic ability or by using the comic life app. on the iPad. All levels of experience and creativity are welcome!
Please bring your iPad to class each day (we have a few extra iPads if you do not have one)

Class Name: EGG-cellent EGGs-periments - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: 1, 2
Instructor: Tina Pellegrino and Sarah Palmieri

Description: This is a science-based course that will allow your child to explore a variety of fun experiments involving eggs! We will practice the scientific method by journaling our predictions, observations & results of each experiment. We will attempt to do many things, such as turning an egg into rubber, creating geodes using egg-shells and building an apparatus that will support an egg when it plummets from high heights! Please join us for some EGG-cellent educational exploration! (If your child has an egg allergy or any aversion to eggs, we do not recommend signing up for this course. Thank you!)

Class Name: “Emily Windsnap” Bookclub - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL

Description: Calling all book lovers!  In this class we’ll be reading and discussing The Tail of Emily Windsnap, by Liz Kessler. We’ll be reading this wonderful story aloud to celebrate the love of reading and foster the use of imagination.  We will make predictions, practice pinpointing main ideas, discuss characters and their development, keep track of the ever changing setting, create a timeline to put events in order, make inferences based on story events, identify conflicts and resolutions from the story, and practice public speaking in front of our small group. Whether you’re a long time fan of the series or a first time reader, come get lost in Emily’s world.

Class Name: Experimenting with Experiments - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL

Description: Have you ever tried to break a ruler using just a piece of paper, or move a boat using soap? These are just a few of the things you'll try to do in this class.  It's a fun and exciting way to learn about science by conducting simple experiments with everyday household objects.

Class Name: Junior Engineers - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL

Open to students in grades: K, 1, 2

Description: This hands-on junior engineering class will involve the planning, designing and building of different types of structures and projects. We will be drawing up blueprints, mapping out our ideas and then building things such as hovercrafts, bridges, towers, and even a catapult!

Class Name: Learn 3D Printing and 3D Design - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: 5, 6
Instructor: Litza Rivera

Description: Create Your Own 3D Print objects!
3D Modeling is one of the fastest growing fields in design. Learn the professional skills and concepts that are popping up in fields from Architecture, to Medicine to Movie making!  (Note:  We are offering another session of this class in the afternoon.  Please only register for one.)

Class Name: Learn to Code
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: 5-8
Instructor: Jeremy Mularella

Description: Students will use iPad apps to develop their visual coding skills. They will progress through various challenges, make their own game, and even program a Star Wars BB-8 droid to complete an obstacle course. (Please note, there is another coding class in the afternoon session.  We recommend students sign up for one or the other, but not both.)

Class Name: Map Making With GIMP
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: 5-8
Instructor: Jerald Nichols

Description: Join us in the quest for cartographic skill and knowledge as commonly used in both novels and games (both tabletop and role-playing). Using the free graphics program, GIMP, we will learn graphic design skills in the context of creating a map of a fictional world. The skills include using color palettes, layers, object enhancements, blurring techniques, and others.

Class Name: Movie Making for Beginners
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: K, 1 & 2
Instructor: Tara Gauthier

Description: Let’s have some fun being creative and while learning how to make your own movie. Students will be introduced to using iMovie on the iPad, learn how to film different types of shots, write a small script, and work in small groups to create their own movie with SHS Instructional Technology Specialist Tara Gauthier.  iPads will be provided for student use during class.

Class Name: There's no place like Home – Earth’s Habitats - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: K, 1, 2
Instructor: Laura Merluzzo

Description: Students will explore earth’s habitats through videos, books, and hands-on experiments to understand the wonderful creatures in the world we call home. Each day we will explore one habitat, learning about the plants and animals that fill each very unique area of our world.

Class Name: Watercolors and Pastels
Time: 8:30AM-11:30AM
Open to students in grades: 4, 5 & 6 - Now open to 4th graders!

Description: We will create 4 beautiful canvas paintings using pastel chalk and watercolor paints.

Class Name: A Healthier, Happier Me

Open to students in grades: 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 - now open to 4th graders!

Description: Being healthier actually makes us happier & we'll prove it! Explore a new fun physical activity each day & learn how to incorporate it into your everyday life. Witness how increasing your activities helps you feel better, learn about food groups and how to read nutritional labels, explore different strategies for managing emotions, and understand how our choices can help us feel happier and healthier.

Class Name: Coding with Legos - SORRY, CLASS IS FULL
Time: 12:00PM-3:00PM
Open to students in grades: K, 1 & 2

Description: What better way to learn coding then incorporating a child's all-time favorite - legos! Students will learn the concepts of coding through interactive games on the iPad and building with legos. Legos will allow students to build robots, learn binary code, and even create their own programming game to play with their peers. iPads will be provided for student use during class.

Description: In this class, students will be able to experience hands on what it's like to be a scientist. We will spend time creating, exploring, and learning all different kinds of fun experiments!

Class Name: Math Facts Cafe
Time: 12:00PM-3:00PM
Open to students in grades: 2, 3, 4 - now accepting 2nd grade!
Instructor: Joanie Markham
Number of students in class:  14
Description: Memorize math facts as fast as you know your name! Acquire skills to memorize math facts with many fun math related activities. Poke-a-fact, chain-link facts, friendly math relay competitions, volleyball math, brain teasers, quizzes and more! You will leave the Math Facts Cafe at the end of the week with resources to continue to sharpen your math fact skills. Math and success add up!

Class Name: Coding Robots with Wonder Workshop -
Time: 12:00PM-3:00PM
Open to students in grades: 5-8
Instructor: Jerald Nichols

Description: Students will learn basic coding skills to program the robots “Dash” and “Dot” https://www.makewonder.com/ Coding is an essential tool of the 21st century student. In Wonder Workshop, we'll code in kid speak. While dreaming up new adventures and bringing them to life, students will master this computer language by transforming robots into ready-to-play characters with code.  This class is for students who do not have prior experience using these robots. (Please note, there is another coding class offered in the morning and we recommend students take only one of these classes.)
