This week is National Teacher Appreciation Week.  Throughout the year, our teachers work tirelessly to help our students to grow in many ways, including the arduous responsibility of remote teaching and learning.  Please join me in recognizing the outstanding work that your child’s teacher does on a daily basis. Without their dedication and support, our students would never realize the academic, social, and emotional growth and success that they do.  Additionally, our teachers work each day, in and out of school, to help our students to develop into respectful, kind, and caring members of our community.  A simple note/email from families and students is always a great way to show your appreciation.

National School Nurse Day is on Wednesday.  Please also join me in recognizing the outstanding work of our nurse, Mrs. Becky Carle.  Each day Mrs. Carle provides medical services to many of our students.  We are very fortunate for Mrs. Carle’s medical expertise as well as her compassionate care of our students.  In addition to providing care for bumps, bruises, and scratched knees, Mrs. Carle is always available to provide social and emotional support or even provide a quiet area for those in need of a respite from their day.

We’re very appreciative for the contributions that both our teachers and nurse make to our school.  Please take a moment, if possible, to recognize and convey your appreciation!

Thank You To Our Parents

Our PTO has made a very generous donation to Shrewsbury Youth and Family Services on behalf of all families in recognition of our teachers during National Teacher Appreciation Week!  Thank you PTO and Spring Street School families, your thoughtfulness, kindness, and generosity is greatly appreciated!

Class Placement Planning

Believe it or not, our discussion related to creating classes for our next school year is quickly approaching.  Linked here, please find information and a survey related to our class placement process for the next school year for students staying at Spring Street School for Grades 1-4.  Any communication needs to be provided by Sunday, May 11th.

Welcome to Sherwood Grade 4 Families

We are so excited that you and your child will be joining the Sherwood Community in the fall. Please be sure to read the Grade 5 Placement Letter as this explains the team placement process, and provides parents and guardians the opportunity to share important information about your child. We would also ask that you check out the following videos to learn more about the Sherwood community.

Happiness-from Mrs. Braun-Lush and Ms. Richardson

Some days happiness may feel easy, and other days it may feel really hard. Happiness can be found in small acts of kindness, gratitude, thoughts and in our connections with others. As we begin the month of May, we would like to focus on acts of happiness. Please feel free to try the activities on this calendar https://www.actionforhappiness.org/meaningful-may from Action for Happiness.  Here are the Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday acts to catch up on as you may choose to begin:

May 1st, Friday: Take a minute to remember what really matters to you and why.

May 2nd, Saturday: Do something meaningful for someone you really care about.

May 3rd, Sunday:  Reconnect with nature today, even if you are stuck indoors.

May 4th, Monday: Focus on what you can do, rather than what you can’t do.

As we physically distance and stay home some of these acts may seem harder to do, but they can be as simple as sharing a discussion during dinner, making a card, drawing nature or connecting with friends by phone because you can. We hope this calendar helps to bring us all happiness for the month of May and we look forward to hearing how it went for your family, please send Mr. Mabie some pictures and notes about how your family used the calendar and found happiness!

Spring Street School Virtual Talent Show...The Show Must Go On!

We are moving the Spring Street Talent show ONLINE!   We know that the kids would still love to showcase their talents, and there certainly is time to practice at home right now.   The Talent Show will be hosted on the Spring Street School PTO Facebook page, but will NOT be a live event.  Members of the group can post a video directly to the page (must send a request to join), or you can send a video to one of the talent show chairs (emails below) who can post it for you.  In order to make this a smooth "event," we ask that the following guidelines be followed:

1.  Videos should be posted on May 14th and 15th (Thurs/Fri) only.  If possible, post them by 6pm on Friday 5/15.  Use the hashtag #SSSTalentShow2020 to make it easier to search for videos, in case there are lots of other posts those days.  Between those two things, it will make finding videos a bit easier on Friday night.

2.  Videos should be 3-4 minutes, max.  Shorter is fine, obviously.

3.  Max two videos per child (ie one solo, one group).  .

4.  Please have the kids introduce themselves and their performance at the beginning of the video.

5.  Grab your popcorn and watch the videos together as a family on Friday night (5/15).  The kids will love to see their friends from school, and maybe they can be watching the show (virtually) together.

6.  Techies, feel free to video-edit kids from separate households together - get creative!  We know that many kids aren't living with their talent show buddies, but some of you out there have the skills to make that happen.

We hope that this will bring the kids and our families together for a fun event.  For those of you not on Facebook, we will try to compile the videos in some way at a later date.  Please let one of us know if that would interest you.  Stay well, and we will see each other back in the auditorium for the 2021 Talent Show.  Meredith Boulay, miyboulay@yahoo.com, Andrea Finnegan, andrea_roderick@yahoo.com, and Leena Philips, leenaphilips@hotmail.com

I hope you and your family stay healthy and well.  Please do not hesitate to reach out to any of us here at Spring Street School for any support, we’d be happy to help in any way we can.

Bryan Mabie
