We kicked off the SHS Alumni & Student Mentoring Program the week of April 20. Twenty-five (25) SHS alumni participated in 14 Zoom meetings with current students, throughout the week. Alumni connected from as far away as California, Oregon, Colorado, Washington DC, Pennsylvania and Ohio, though many were as close as Connecticut, Boston and Shrewsbury. Alumni offered peer advice as they shared their post high school experiences related to college, internships and their specific career paths.
Alumni were open and honest about their successes, and even their failures. Some talked about knowing what they wanted to do right out of high school but then changed their minds once in college. Others shared that although they didn’t know what they wanted to do after high school, their changed paths brought them successes and made them who they are today.
Regardless of their journey, college choice, career path or specialty, three themes emerged:
· Pursue what makes you happy; it truly does take the “work” out of “work”
· Join clubs, volunteer or just explore your interests. Try new things because you never know what opportunities you’ll discover.
· Network, network, network. Even the smallest connection can lead to big things.
Alumni and students both had overwhelmingly positive feedback about the week. We look forward to continuing to offer these mentoring sessions in the future and expanding the list of topics.
