Spring Street Link

October 9, 2018

I hope you and your family enjoyed the long weekend.

We are grateful to have had the opportunity on Friday to participate in collaborative learning experiences across the district.  On Friday morning, our classroom teachers had the opportunity to continue working on planning and refining our standards-based literacy instruction including articulating learning goals by trimester/month/week, developing formative assessments, identifying instructional resources, and even creating lessons and learning activities.

In the afternoon, teachers were able to spend time on a self-directed ‘Pathway’ which enables each teacher to pursue learning about a strategy, practice, or content that is directly related to an area in which each teacher identifies as a passion or area that they would like to learn more.  Some of our Pathways topics include mindfulness, choosing technology tools, meeting the social and emotional needs of our students, growth mindset, global education, producing quality work, productive discourse, and more.  We are all very excited to be participating in this learning model and exploring ways that we can incorporate what we learn into instruction and student learning.

Dismissal Reminders

This time of year always presents a good opportunity to remind families about our afternoon dismissal routine:

  • To ensure the safety of all our students, we request that early dismissals from school occur prior to 3:00pm.  After that time, our school is quite busy preparing for the dismissal of nearly 400 students, we want to ensure our focus is on the safe dismissal of all
  • Our front driveway circle is closed to all traffic with the exception of buses 3:00-3:30 each day
  • Front door walkers are dismissed from the front door to an awaiting adult to walk off of our campus.  In fairness to all families, please do not park in the front circle and use this routine to avoid our parent pick up line.

We appreciate your cooperation and support of our routines

Shriners' Hospitals Can Pull Tab Collection

We all feel so much better when we help others! Shriners' Hospitals around the world help children and their families with life-threatening conditions. We are fortunate to have a Shriners' right next door in Springfield, MA. We can help by collecting/bagging can pull tabs and bringing them into school. Thanks to Mrs. Welch for spearheading this donation drive! Please see the attached document for more information.

Scholastic Book Fair, Help Needed

Calling all volunteers! This year's Spring Street Scholastic Book Fair will be held 10/30- 11/6 in the Media Center. Each day the students will have the opportunity during Media class to see a video with Mrs. Morgan about this year's top offerings, then make wishlists of their favorite books. Books can be purchased during class, online, or at the Book Fair Day, which is during parent/teacher conferences on 11/6. Volunteers are essential to making this important fundraiser a success! Please consider helping with set up, making wishlists with your child's class, or running a register on Book Fair Day. Details can be found here. 2018 Spring Street Scholastic Book Fair

SEPAC Meeting

Special Education Parent Advisory Council (SEPAC) is a volunteer organization made up of parents and caregivers whose children receive special education services through the Shrewsbury Public Schools. We provide a forum for parents and caregivers to share experiences and exchange information. Together, we work for understanding, respect, support and the appropriate education of all children with special needs in our community.

Please join us for our first meeting of the year on Thursday, 10/11 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the Floral Street School Media Center. We'll be discussing upcoming events and connecting with members new and old. Refreshments will be provided. All are welcome.
