Oak Middle School Update to Families

winter scene

January 10, 2021

Dear OMS Families,

We are excited to have our students back in the building this week after our vacation, a week of remote learning, and the tumultuous events at the Capitol.  Our students keep us positive with their insight and energy.  We have missed them for sure.

This week we are bringing you a new page on our website full of helpful resources for families.  Our counseling staff has curated these resources to help families support their children, especially when students are working remotely.  They include tips for successful learning at home, as well as organizational and planning tools that help students stay on top of their assignments.  We know that remote learning can stress even the most motivated students.  We hope that when you find it tough going at home, you can turn to these resources for some assistance.  We will continue to add to this list over the course of the winter and spring.  Please browse the list of resources HERE.

Thank you to our school psychologist, Mindy Sefton, and our counselors, Kristen Minio, Jenni Lencioni, and Laura Candelaria, for their assistance in curating these resources.  And don’t forget, our monthly issue of The Middle Years is also a helpful resource.

Respectfully,
Ann

Media Center News (SORA)
The media centers across the district are excited to share that we now have a K-12 subscription to an iPad app called SORA that provides access to ebooks and audiobooks that students can read or listen to on their iPads. SORA enables users to borrow up to 3 books at a time. Users can also place holds on an additional 3 books at a time.

Here is a video overview of SORA.

Here is the link to a step-by-step tutorial that explains how to get started using SORA on your child's iPad:  https://bit.ly/2JZa2SZ

Notes From Our Nurses

School Illness Information:
When your child is not feeling well, please call the child sick line in the morning to let the school know that they will be absent for the day. It is very important to call the child sick line and notify the school of any illness for all students, including fully remote cohorts and hybrid cohorts on in-person and remote days.

Influenza Vaccine Information:
Please submit an updated immunization record after your child has received the influenza vaccine for this school year. This is a new school requirement from the MA Department of Health for 2020 and all students need to have documentation provided to the health office.

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has extended the deadline for students to receive a flu vaccination to February 28, 2021. This includes both hybrid and remote learners.  Please forward documentation of your child’s flu shot.

Please call or email the health office with any questions:

Direct Donation Campaign
The SMS PTO works each year to raise nearly $40,000 to help fund various field trips, programs, and other enrichments at Sherwood and Oak. While this year is different in regards to some programs, we are still funding what we can and working to raise funds as we can. Rather than offering sales of various items, where only a portion of your purchase goes to our schools, this guarantees 100% of your donation supports our students and staff.

Due to limitations this year, this will be our largest fundraising event of the year and we look forward to your support. As we continue to fund programs and materials during this challenging year, we also continue to fundraise so that we may continue to fund as programs and events return. Any amount towards our $10,000 goal is appreciated! Please see our letter and pledge form at the following link:

• Personal check (check made payable to SMS PTO)

Yearbook Picture Information
Did your child miss picture day, but still wish to be included in the yearbook?  This is your opportunity to make sure this happens.  Please select an appropriate photo that displays your child's face and upper body, Rename the photo so it is your child's name, and then fill out the survey below - there's a question in it where you will upload the picture.  These pictures will then be included in the yearbook which will come out in the springtime.
