December 8, 2019

Dear OMS Families,

On Friday, we will send home our first trimester report cards.  You will notice that we have moved away from our traditional habits of mind where we reported out on specific student behaviors such as homework completion, technology use, participation, and general conduct.  Instead, we are reporting out on Habits of Work and Learning, also known as HOWLs.  Our HOWLs are respect, responsibility, and perseverance.  Each class will report out on one or more of these skills.

In order for you to have a better understanding of the skills included in each of these, we will include a copy of the grading rubrics with the report card.  The rubric will help you to know exactly which skills are being graded within each HOWL and what each proficiency level means.  Teachers have been working to incorporate HOWLs into their instruction by teaching explicit lessons on the skills, integrating the skills into their daily lessons, and providing targeted feedback to students on their level of mastery.

We are excited to share this new approach with you and hope the rubric provides the information you need to have a productive conversation with your child how they are developing with these important social-emotional learning skills.  You can view the HOWLs Rubrics HERE.

Have a great week!
