OMS Weekly Update to families

June 17, 2018

Dear OMS Families,

It is hard to believe that this is the fortieth and final weekly update of the year! It has been a wonderful year of learning with your children. Although we part ways for a bit, we always look forward to meeting our new incoming 7th graders and reuniting with our returning students at the end of August.  It is much too quiet in the building over the summer!

A few reminders as you head off to summer vacations:

  • If you have not done so, please moment to respond to our annual family survey.  The survey will be open until Thursday, June 21st.  Your responses are greatly appreciated!    Click here: OMS Family Survey Link
  • Please make sure to have your child choose some great summer reading from our list HERE.  Students are asked to read 3 books.  One book should be from the “Sponsored Novels” list.
  • Team assignments will be available on the Powerschool Parent Portal on or around August 6th.
  • Team supply lists are available on our website HERE.
  • We have 2 Open Houses in August, both on August 23rd.  The first is at 2:30 for students new to our school system.  The 3:30 session is for our incoming 7th graders and returning students.  Students will be able to view their team and homeroom lists and visit their classrooms.
  • The first day of school is Tuesday, August 28th.  There is no school on August 31st (Teacher Professional Development Day) and September 3rd (Labor Day.)

We hope your summer vacation is full of outdoor adventure, fun with family and friends, and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of school year commitments.  In the next few months, we’ll try and do the same:)

All our best,
Ann M. Jones
Scott Yonker
Anne Koertge

Please take a moment to respond to our annual family survey.   The School Council and Oak Middle School staff uses your feedback on our performance this past year to set improvement goals for the coming year.  The survey will be open until Thursday, June 21st.  Your responses are greatly appreciated!

Food for Families – OMS Food Pantry Update
The Food Pantry Committee would like to once again thank you for all of your support to get our program off the ground. We opened our program with 450 pounds of food and have continued to receive donations as needed when some inventory has been low on certain items.
For the five weeks we have consistently been supporting 3 families every weekend sending home approximately 30 pounds of food each weekend. We will be sending home food through the last week of school and then close the pantry for the summer.
The Share Basket Program has been a huge success.  Every day we have students share food that they are not going to eat rather than throw it away. This program will continue through Wednesday June 20th.
We will reopen in early September and thank you in advance for your continued support of this very important program. Every student deserves a healthy meal!
Math Review - Optional Summer Practice
For students/families interested in some summer math review/practice, please visit this link to access downloadable resources compiled by our math curriculum coordinator.
Physical Education FITNESSGRAM
An important standard on the Shrewsbury Public Schools Report Card in Physical Education is fitness.  All schools use a program called FITNESSGRAM to assess students’ fitness level.  We believe that regular physical activity contributes to good health, function, and well being and is important throughout a person’s lifetime.  Therefore, school programs should have a long-term view of promoting appropriate physical activity.  FITNESSGRAM emphasizes participation in a wide variety of physical fitness activities. Our goal is for each student to achieve scores in the Healthy /Target Fitness Zone.
A FINESSGRAM report will be emailed for each student on the last day of school. This report will include your child’s scores and information on the FITNESSGRAM Health Fitness Zones. The Healthy Fitness Zone represents the level of fitness needed for good health.
Bus Registration for the 2018-2019 School Year Open
Bus Registration for the 2018-2019 school year is now open.  All students who plan to ride a bus to any of the Shrewsbury Public Schools, St. John's High School, Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, St. Mary's School, Montessori School, or Al Hamra Academy MUST REGISTER for service at this link.
