OMS Weekly Update to families

November 4, 2018

REMINDER: There is NO SCHOOL for students on Tuesday, November 6th due to Conference Day.

Dear OMS Families,
Recently, our Director of School Nursing Noelle Freeman, presented the findings of the 2017 Regional Youth Health Survey to the School Committee.  Her report can be found HERE and the slide presentation to the school committee can be found HERE.
At Oak, all of the grade 8 students take this survey approximately every two years.  Ms. Freeman noted some startling statistics revealed by the survey:

  • approximately 25% of students at both OMS and SHS reported feeling so sad or hopeless over a 2-week period that they stopped doing usual activities
  • 5% of students at SHS report having made a suicide plan in the past year
  • approximately 15% of students in both buildings report self-injury
  • 35% of OMS students and 12% of SHS students report being bullied on school property
  • All of the above percentages are approximately doubled for SHS students who identify as LGBTQ
  • 39% of OMS students and 68% of SHS students report stress as the top issue among students their age

As a school community, we have recognized the steady increase over the last few years in students who present with anxiety and other stress-related issues.  The good news is that, along with the schools, there are several community-based groups who are working to peel back the layers of some of these statistics in order to determine the best way to address the social-emotional health of our youth. The Shrewsbury Wellness Advisory Committee (SWAC) is one such group along with Shrewsbury Coalition for Abuse Prevention and Education (SCAPE.)  In addition, Shrewsbury Public Schools has a strategic priority that focuses on improving the well-being of our students and incorporating more social-emotional learning in each and every one of our classrooms (See Strategic Priorities HERE.)
We know that the foundation of social emotional health is students who feel connected to their community and we invite you to partner with us by participating in a special event on November 13th at 6:00 in the Oak Middle School Auditorium.  Please click on the link below for more information:

I look forward to seeing you there and working with you to support the healthy development of our community’s kids.

PTO News
Reminder that our second PTO meeting is  this coming Monday 11/5 at 7 PM in the oak media center. We will have childcare and pizza.  Come join us  and have some input into the events and activities that we will plan to help support the field trip/enrichment activities for the kids.

Magazine Drive
TO member will be on hand to assist. Feel free to sign-up for multiple days if you are available.
The Magazine Drive is the PTO’s largest grossing fundraiser and very important for us to be able to fund activities and programs all year long.  At least 2 volunteers are needed each day.  Morning volunteers will gather the collection envelopes from the office, these orders must be tallied for the day and payments verified. Afternoon volunteers will pass out prizes during lunch to students that have placed orders. The jobs are pretty straightforward and a PTO member will be on hand to assist.  Feel free to sign-up for multiple days if you are available.
Thank you!

Oak Fall Play Presentation
Oak Middle School proudly presents their Annual Fall Play: "My Fair Share of the Sun".
Performances are Friday, November 16th and Saturday, November 17th at 7:00pm in the Oak Auditorium.

Tickets are: $10 for student/seniors  and $12 for adults, which can be purchased at the door.

Uncle Fy and his niece Zoe plant 14 white birches along the lonely dirt road to his cabin in the woods. Despite the best efforts of a few of the trees, the group splits into two rival groups, each living on opposite sides of the road, as they race to grow to the sky and crowd each other out in an insatiable hunger for sunlight. This is a symbolist play about us—all of us—and our struggle to be the social creatures we all know we have to be in order to live together on both sides of the road.

Oak Ski Club

The Oak Middle School will once again be sponsoring a Ski Club after school during the winter season. Ski club is not a team; it is group skiing/snowboarding offered at discounted prices.
