GREETINGS FROM COOLIDGE SCHOOL

August 17, 2015

Dear Families,

I hope you are having fun and keeping cool as we make our way to the end of August. There couldnÕt be a better time to live lakeside! Although your children may feel less enthusiastic about losing the unstructured time that summer provides, I am very excited. This initial welcome letter signals a new start, and it means that very soon IÕll be hearing the unique and special sounds of student voices throughout the building. The past two months of quiet helped to prepare for a new year, and itÕs high energy thatÕs coming soon. WeÕll be ready!

į      IÕm looking forward to greeting parents of incoming at Kindergarten Orientation on this Thursday evening, August 20th from 6-7 pm in the cafeteria.

į      The building is being cleaned as I write in anticipation of Visiting Day this coming Friday, August 21. PTO and our fourth grade tour guides will be excited about hosting both new and returning families for informal tours of the building from 5-6:30 pm.

į      Our new school secretary, Mrs. Cathy Cairns has started work in the Office. WeÕve registered nine new students already and are working hard to lay the groundwork for a smooth Opening Day. Please keep reading for her special message.

On your end, I hope youÕve been successful with making time for learning. As you know, reading routines help children to maintain their skills, and knowing thereÕs a designated time for books helps keep summer reading demands manageable. (For a list of summer reading expectations by grade, please click here: http://schools.shrewsbury-ma.gov/egov/docs/1401827326494.htm) Remember, students in 3rd and 4th grade are required to complete and return the ŌGrade 3 and 4 Activity SheetÕ during the first week back. Finally, donÕt forget to revisit math facts. The first unit of Math in Focus links to the previous gradeÕs mastery skills; thereafter teachers quickly move into new content. Having sums at the ready will help your child make connections quickly.

Most importantly, be sure to have dinnertime conversations with your child about their hopes for the coming year. Talking about new beginnings now helps children to anticipate change with a focus on the positive.

I look forward to seeing you very soon!

Sincerely,

Amy

A Message From our new school secretary: Meet Mrs. Cathy Cairns

Dear Coolidge Community,

I am thrilled to be a part of the Coolidge School Community!  What a great place for children to learn. I, too, have a lot to learn and I hope you will hang in there with me as I learn all of your children's names and faces, as well as all of the different facets of this position.  Please stop in and say hello. I am happy to help in any way I can. Just email me at: ccairns@shrewsbury.k12.ma.us or call (508) 841-8880.

As I work to learn the names of all students, parents and staff, I would appreciate your introducing yourself when you greet me until I can greet you by name. Most importantly, when coming to pick up your child for early release, please have a photo ID ready to show when you sign out. I hope to get to know everyone as soon as possible, but for now, and for the safety of the Coolidge students, please be prepared for a slightly slower initial pace in the Office.

Thank you!

Reminders from our School Nurse, Mrs. Zimmermann:

į      Please check to make sure your immunizations are up to date.

į      A new medication order is required at the beginning of each school year for prescription or over the counter medications that are taken on a regular basis.  Please note that the medication policy is district wide.  All necessary forms can be found on the SPS District webpage under     ŅNursing /Health Department:Ó.

į      Parents, if your child has a physical over the summer please submit a copy in the fall.

See you soon!
