AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITIES PROGRAM (ASAP)

Throughout the year, Sherwood offers a variety of hour-long after-school activities.  Classes typically meet once a week for six weeks, and each session costs $40.  Registration for the spring session is now open through the parent portal. Class size is limited, and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Payment is due at the time of registration.  Unpaid registrations will be automatically deleted.

Class: Astronomy Club
Description: Sherwood students have a unique opportunity to access micro telescopes through the “YouthAstroNet" program run out of Harvard University. No astronomy or photography experience is required, however interested students should be curious and motivated to explore the universe and willing to persevere to learn how to take raw images and manipulate them using web-based tools to create their own astrophotography works of art. Students will learn how to access and process images in person and will be able to continue the exploration process at home.  Students who joined the club during the winter are welcome to join again and extend their work.

Class: Table Top Games
Description: Looking for a chance to strategize, cooperate, and problem solve away from screens? Then join the Tabletop Games Afterschool Group. Participants will take part in a variety of gaming activities including role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons, card games like Bohnanza or The Tea Dragon Society, or board games like Forbidden Desert and Disney Codenames. Try them all or stick with your favorite as you play with friends to see who has the most fun overall!

Class: Hours of Code
Description: The “official” Hour of Code takes place during Computer Science Education week in early December. BUT who says that we have to limit it to one hour? This class will allow you to explore some websites, online courses, and apps that will allow you to independently learn to code! Please note, this class will be based on students teaching themselves (and classmates!) how to complete some coding tasks accessible on the iPad in a quiet, collaborative environment! Headphones or earbuds, although not required, are helpful for using some of the tools and apps in the course.

Class: Volleyball - sorry, class is full
Description: Here’s your chance to learn volleyball from the Shrewsbury High coaches and players. Work on your skills for an hour each week. Learn the basics of passing, setting and serving.

Class: Chess Without Stresssorry, class is full
Description: This chess course is run by a highly-rated USCF tournament player and tournament director who will ensure a level of instruction that fits every child. This course is for any chess player who wants to continue honing their chess skills. The student will learn chess in a fun and an interactive way according to their skill levels in smaller group setting without forgoing healthy competition. The course consists of basic understanding of the game, tactics, various traps, opening /endgame principles, recognizing checkmate patterns, chess tournaments and chess puzzle competition. The course inspires the students to think out of the box and educate kids how to look beyond obvious rather than just playing action/ reactionary game. The students are exposed to a wide variety of kinesthetic, visual and auditory activities as we integrate dynamic elements such as videos, puzzles, games, and fun workout.

Class: Ceramics - sorry, class is full
Description: Students will learn the basics of working with clay. Techniques include, pinch pots, slabs, coils, and slipping and scoring. Projects may include creating a relief, creature sculptures, and vessels. Students who have previously taken this class can create more complex work. All work will be painted with food safe glaze.

Class: Drama Club - sorry, class is full
Description: This interactive club will work on the basics of acting and improv skills. Basic choreography skills may also be introduced. No previous experience is required, anyone interested in drama or theater is welcome to join! Thanks to the generosity of Mrs. Macomber, this class is free to all students.
Schedule: Mondays, 3:15-4:15
Dates: 4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13, 5/20, 6/3

Cost: FREE!

Additional Information

  • There is no transportation provided for this class.  Parents must pick up their child at the main entrance promptly at 4:15, or you can register your child for the late bus.
  • Students who are enrolled in extended day will be brought to the cafeteria after class and you may pick them up from ESC as you normally would
  • Class fees are non-refundable.  Credit will not be given if your child misses a class.  If a class is cancelled (for inclement weather or teacher illness) we will make every effort to offer a make-up class on a different date

  • Log into the Parent Portal.
  • From the navigation menu on the left, select “Sports and Activities”
  • Choose the class you wish to take by clicking “Assign Fee”
  • From the navigation menu, select “Payment Center” and you will be redirected to School Pay
  • Your spot is not reserved until you have completed your payment. Unpaid registrations will be automatically deleted.
