Strategic Priority: Promote Health & Wellbeing

  • Reinforce respectful, positive school cultures in order to empower members to act with kindness, empathy, and compassion.
  • Communicate and model the importance of proper nutrition, exercise, and healthy living habits.
  • Ensure a systematic response to students who are struggling with social, emotional, and/or mental health issues.
Five Year Goals
  1. 90% of students, parents, and educators will agree that their schools’ social and emotional cultures are healthy.
  2. 75% of students will participate in at least sixty minutes of physical activity each day (both during and outside of school).
  3. Develop a comprehensive approach to support students experiencing significant social, emotional, and/or mental health issues.

The Shrewsbury Public School District offers a myriad of services in order to identify and respond to a growing number of students who are struggling with social, emotional, and/or mental health issues.

Photograph of art created by students to help reduce anxiety

Students in SHS National Art Honor Society created artwork as a collection of pieces that would be used for students who are struggling with anxiety. Providing these pieces of artwork for students to color in the the nurses' and counselors' offices will reduce out of class time for students who are struggling. It is a great way to share the talents of the students to help other students.

Grant funding from the Shrewsbury Education Foundation allowed for each school across the district to be equipped with a binder of over 30 original images, markers and colored pencils.

The grant was written by Mrs. Noelle Freeman, Director of Nursing and Mrs. Pamela LeBlanc, Director of Visual Art K-12.

Each loom is equipped with materials and will provide an alternative to engage in a quiet, calming, creative, mindful space for all students of Sherwood Middle School.
